Mono – An Open Source / Cross Platform .NET Framework

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Here’s something I just came across that I found fascinating: An open source, cross platform implementation of the .NET Framework called Mono . The most amazing thing mentioned on this site is that Microsoft is (unofficially) cooperating with this project. This could lead to .NET applications running on Macs, Linux, non-Pocket PC based cell phones, etc.

Original article that lead me to Mono: IT Manager’s Journal – Developers are finding platform lines blurring

This is an interesting article inferring that software development is becoming more and more truely cross platform.

Google Groups

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

My current Waterloo course (CS341 – Algorithm Design) is using a newsgroup to communicate with students and provide a forum for asking questions. I’ve been using Google Groups to participate easliy without having to set up a news reader like Outlook Express (blah!).

It just dawned on me though: There is a ton of knowledge contained within these newsgroups that you don’t get through Google’s normal search space. Literally, every newsgroup post is here and indexed. The life of any techie just got alot easier!

Frapper! – Group Map

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

Check this out… Using the Google Maps API, these guys have created a service called Frapper where you can create a group map. If you are involved with a group of people from around the globe, you can add pointers to them all on a common map from Google maps.
